9 'Supertall' Towers Coming to Toronto

2 min read

Toronto is well known for its high-rise buildings and iconic skyline. However, the city is now entering a transformative phase of vertical development, as various new supertall towers are set to redefine Toronto’s skyline. A supertall tower is defined as any building that rises 300 metres or taller. These ambitious projects, featuring a mix of uses, represent a bold step in the city’s vertical growth.

We explored nine supertall developments currently proposed or under construction in Toronto.

1. 191 Bay

191 Bay, by QuadReal Property Group, is a proposed 64-storey office tower, rising 374.15m in Toronto’s Financial District. Designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects and Adamson Associates, the tower will offer 148,671m² of office space and 14,530m² of retail, replacing the historic Commerce Court South and East buildings.

2. SkyTower at Pinnacle One Yonge

SkyTower is the second phase of Pinnacle One Yonge’s multi-tower project. Designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects for Pinnacle International, the 106-storey SkyTower will rise 351.85m, becoming the tallest residential building in Canada. This mixed-use tower will feature residential units, a hotel, commercial offices, retail space, and a community centre. The first phase of Pinnacle One Yonge saw the completion of the Prestige Tower, rising 65-storeys and 217m.

3. College Park Redevelopment

The College Park redevelopment, designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects for GWL Realty Advisors, will introduce three mixed-use towers with the tallest standing 333.3m through 96 storeys. This proposal fully restores the heritage landmark, built in 1930, including the expanded 12-storey podium. College Park redevelopment will offer 2,334 residential units, 24,861m² of office space, 21,380m² of retail, an 18,801m² hotel, cultural spaces, a daycare, and public areas.

4. 19 Bloor West

19 Bloor West is a proposed 99 storey mixed-use tower in Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood. This 317.4m tower, designed by Arcadis for Reserve Properties and Westdale Properties, offers 1,290 residential units and street-level retail space.

5. One Bloor West

Tridel’s One Bloor West, formerly known as The One, is Canada’s first ‘supertall’ tower, set to rise 85 storeys (308.6m) at Yonge and Bloor. Designed by Foster + Partners and Core Architects, One Bloor West will feature 476 residential units, a hotel, and retail space, with luxurious amenities including a sky lobby, spa, fitness facility, sky terrace, and entertaining rooms.

6. Forma West

Forma is a two-tower project designed by Frank Gehry from Gehry Partners and Adamson Associates for Great Gulf Group, Westdale Properties, and Dream. The shorter East tower is 73 storeys and 262.8m tall, therefore is not considered a supertall. Forma West is a supertall tower, rising 308m with 84 storeys. Both towers will offer residential, commercial, and institutional spaces.

7. Tower Three at Pinnacle One Yonge

The third tower of Pinnacle One Yonge, designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects, is proposed to stand adjacent to the SkyTower at 92 storeys and 320.35m. This residential tower offers 859 units and an abundance of indoor and outdoor amenity space.

8. Union Park

Union Park, by Oxford Properties Group, is a four-tower complex, with three residential towers designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects and one office tower designed by Pelli Clarke & Partners. The residential buildings are 50, 50, and 71 storeys. The office tower is the tallest of the four, rising 61 storeys and 303.33m. Located in Toronto’s Entertainment District, Union Park will feature approximately 1,800 residential units, an on-site day care, retail space, and offices.

9. Concord Sky

Concord Sky, designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox and Architects—Alliance for Concord Adex, is a 95-storey residential building, expected to reach a height of 300.2m. Plans for Concord Sky will bring 1,407 residential units, retail space, and commercial space to Toronto’s Garden District, while restoring the existing heritage building on site.

As Toronto continues to evolve, the emergence of supertall towers is playing a defining role in its transformation. These ambitious projects, along with several other proposed or approved new towers, are set to reshape the city’s skyline.
